Jewish Federation and Partnership Agencies Sponsor Community Blood Drive During Week of December 22-28 -Donors Needed to Give Blood

by Rhonda Spivak, Nov 29, 2017

The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg is adopting the Winnipeg Blood Centre and has committed to recruit new donors and fill appointments to help collect blood during a crucial season of the year. As Adam Levene President of the Jewish Federation says, “The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, together with its partner agencies, is pleased to sponsor a community blood drive with Canadian Blood Services during the week of December 22-28.  The need for donations of  blood is great at all times and doesn’t stop during the holiday season.  Please contact Canadian Blood Services for further information.” (go to www.blood.ca  or call 1 888 2366 283 or Download GiveBlood app)

By adopting a clinic, organizations such as the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg can make a difference in the lives of patients in need.

As Elaine Goldstine, CEO of the Jewish Federation says “We are very happy to do our part as a Federation.  Giving blood is saving a life!”

Mike Choi of Canadian Blood Services told the Winnipeg Jewish Review that "This December at Winnipeg Blood Centre we still need to fill 2000 empty appointments to support patients in need. We are excited to be working with the Jewish community in Winnipeg and have them support a crucial time of year for blood collection."

Choi noted that, for example, " A cancer patient receiving ongoing treatment throughout the holidays may need up to 5 units of  blood per week"

On November 27, 2017,  Jewish community leaders attended the Winnipeg Blood Centre on 777 William Ave to  make a group blood donation to kick-off  the adoption and to encourage the Jewish community in Winnipeg to donate blood from Dec. 22- 28. Blood donors — including first-time donors — are needed to make the clinic a success. (Also, to help spread the word about the constant need for blood you can tag your social media posts with #givelife on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.)

The Jewish community leaders who attended the kick off  on November 27 to donate blood were as follows (in alphabetical order): Ilana Abrams, Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada, Rabbi Shmuli Altein, Jewish Learning Institute,   Lori Binder, CEO, Winnipeg Board of Jewish Education, Rena Elbaze, Engagement & Education Director, Congregation Shaarey Zedek, Shelley Faintuch, Community Relations Director, Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, Elaine Goldstine, CEO, Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, Nancy Hughes, Executive Director, Shalom Residences,
